The challenge was to design a Modern Japanese House. This 300sqm house sits on a corner lot . By planning and designing based on the actual site orientation, we maximized the site's potential. We faced all major glass fenestrations to the North Direction and blocked the harsh sun in the West and South direction. The architectural character of the house was a take off from a modern japanese lantern and Tadao Ando's concrete blocks.
There was a required architectural style in the village and to make the house stand-out, we modernized their cottage theme. Exposed rafters and wood panelling are the basic design theme connection. To give it a twist we eliminated the corners by using corner glass windows and played with the volume by pushing and pulling the planes of the walls. As a result, we gave the owners a home that is both functional and a sure head turner.
This 80 sqm residence proves that a small but well-designed house can give you more than what you may expect.
